- A common next step is to start with the Business & Marketing Planning Process and review the Plan if one exists, or write a Plan if there is none. Financials are also reviewed as part of this step in order to look for trends, anomalies and opportunities. Importantly, these financials are then used in conjunction with the Business Plan to develop forward-looking forecasts and projections. During this process, quality and performance measurement systems can be developed and incorporated into meaningful management controls and reports, thus enabling the business owner to maintain an in depth awareness of how the business is REALLY performing.

Another effective approach is to spend more time in the beginning performing an in depth analysis of the most critical phases of the business, i.e. determining where it hurts the most and why. This analysis is followed by a list of recommendations and expected positive results.
